We would like to thank everyone who attended and supported
this year's Wreckhouse International Jazz & Blues Festival.
This year we hosted our best festival yet.
With the help of Target Brand Architects we launched the new Wreckhouse Jazz &
Blues brand and our "flying people" advertising campaign and received a positive
and enthusiastic response. The Wreckhouse Jazz and Blues Festival is sure
to become a household name for Jazz & Blues in Newfoundland and Labrador,
Canada, and around the world.
The Martini Bar Downstairs on George Street was introduced as
our new host venue. We would like to thank the management and staff of the
Martini Bar for their help and excellent service. They provided an superb
venue for the Jazz & Blues Festival and met the needs of our musicians, staff
and volunteers. Located in the heart
of St. John's legendary George Street, the deck provided an excellent setting
for our 4 pm Happy Hour shows, while the downstairs offered a great nighttime
venue suitable for live music and large crowds, with ample room for viewing and
enjoying the music. Some notable
acts were the Chris Tarry Group, the fabulous Laila Biali Trio, and our very own
Terry Lynn Eddy Blues Band. The festival closed on a high note at the
Martini Bar Downstairs, with our presentation of the Ladies of Jazz with Heather
Bambrick, Janet Cull and Dana Parsons attracting the largest audience of the
week. It was an extremely successful
festival, with comments from audience members such as "better than the first
time in May" and "[it’s] a MUST see."
We also hosted an outdoor concert venue at Harbourside Park,
with two full days of music on Friday and Saturday.
The Friday night show brought a wonderful crowd, great music and a
beautiful night sky. With acts like
Chris Kirby and the Marquee, Duane Andrews Quartet (feat. Bjorn Thoroddsen), the
Michel Donato Trio and L'orkestre des Pas Perdus, it was a night of incredible
musicianship and musical diversity. Saturday afternoon saw an enthusiastic and
energetic audience of all ages, with many families in attendance and acts such
as the Idlers, the Dogberries, the Mack Barfoot Trio and more getting
everyone dancing. Saturday night was
another great show, despite Mother Nature’s lack of co-operation. A great crowd
came to see the Jean Martin Trio, Laila Biali Trio and the Mary Barry Sextet.
Those who stayed through the rain enjoyed some world class music and had
a great time!
The Wreckhouse International Jazz & Blues Festival 2008 was a
great success, with increased attendance and ticket sales, world class music,
dedicated staff and volunteers, enthusiastic patrons, and fantastic support from
our government and corporate sponsors.
Stay tuned for details about upcoming shows!
